Users play a critical role in the matters of information security. Even a small error in execution such as unintended disclosures, failing to properly dispose of paper-based documents containing sensitive data, accidentally erasing vital data/information etc., or non-adherence to policies / procedures may result in everything from regulatory noncompliance to irreconcilable data loss.

Studies conducted upon cyber-attacks, have clearly demonstrated that under most such attacks, user negligence and lack of knowledge on security policies and procedures have surfaced as the principal causes. In fact, in most cases, such users are innocent, non-malicious and uninformed user.

In today’s networked scenario, the negligence on the part of a user in one entity may impact several other entities too. This is especially true in the matters of cyber-attacks. Though technological defences are a valuable weapon in preventing breaches, yet their capabilities ultimately depend on the security awareness on the technical personnel who configure such defences and also on the user input.

The term ‘Users’ in the context of awareness training does also include vendors, third-party service providers, clients and in fact, all those who interact with an entity in some form. The role vendors and TPSPs play in the matters of security posture of an entity cannot be considered little. The significant the role is, the significant the awareness training to them too. Unless they are aware about the policies, procedures and security requirements of the entity they serve as outsourced partners, they can be negligent in adherence and cause severe damage to the principal entity. Many a time, these protocols remain tied at the contracting level and what should reasonably be disseminated to the users in the outsourced unit, does not get disseminated. Consequently, the security posture of the outsourcing unit is in challenge.
